received my batteries via Ebay today. Replaced old cells with new ones. I'm
charging the new ones, and then I'll do some tests.
Do a search on Ebay for 'US18650' I got eight cells for about $30. They were
originally cell phone battery packs which I had to CAREFULLY disassemble.
I found a site that covers this process (different computer, but same battery
pack--BP51) my info bp51 batt only has 6 cells not 8

I don't have any specific final data ready, but rest assured, the Panasonic cells outperform the Sony's by about a million miles! Stay tuned! I'll let you know when the info is posted! In the meantime, let me know if you have any used BP-5x's you'd like to sell!

Yes, but the whole story is not quite as dramatic. The early DVD-R/-RW drives that could write at a maximum of 2X would not recognize 4X DVD-R discs and could possibly damage their laser diodes trying in vain to identify the discs unless the user intervened and stopped the drive. Pioneer provides a firmware fix to the drives so that they will recognize 4X discs and record them at 2X. See www.pioneerelectronics.com/hs/ to download the fix for their drives. In the DVD+R/+RW camp, 4X discs in early 2.4X drives will appear to behave normally, but the write strategy will create irregular marks in the discs and the discs will fail. A firmware upgrade fix for the Memorex DVD+R/+RW drive can be downloaded from the Memorex website at www.memorex.com. The battery industry is making incremental capacity gains of 8-10% per year. This trend is expected to continue.
